the chuluc cabrera family
Melvin and Breny have lived together for 12 years. They used to live with Melvin’s parents in a small room until Breny inherited a piece of land from her parents for a couple of years ago; she has all the papers on the rule. Melvin and Breny are the caregivers of this family, Melvin works as shoemaker making boots, depending on the demand he makes around $70 a week.
He also works on fields during the weekend or when it is required. Breny works as a kitchen assistant in a cafeteria located in Pastores. She works from 7 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Saturday getting a salary of $83 a month. They lived in a room built with corrugated metal sheets, wood and a dirt floor that measure around 3X4 meters where they have 3 beds and two old wardrobes.
The conditions of the house are not good; they suffer from cold weather during the night and it gets hot during the day. They have access to running water and sewers; they share electric service with their relatives, three more families live in the same place (In-laws and brothers with their families).
They have a little space that they use as a kitchen, they have an improved stove that works with wood (they get the wood from the fields). They share running water with their relatives so they have to carry and get the water from their house. The three children attend public school in Pastores.
They are in need of food, clothes, and shoes for the children since they do not earn enough money to cover all the house’s expenses and sometimes is difficult for them to get everything they need. But thanks to a CASA client they are not in the cold anymore and no longer on dirt floors protecting them from getting sick.
